Track Recap

Last night we were back at everyone’s favorite track Council Rock South!  This is where we will be for all of July and August.  Last night we had 20 ¼ runners who came out including one new runner and one runner who came out for their first time this season.  It’s exciting to be back at Council Rock South and not just because of the better location, but also we have a stable location for the next two months.  I was driving myself crazy trying to get us a track week in and week out.  I can now focus more energy on you the runners.  Which leads me to my next point, one of the new guys last night said to me that I was being tough on another runner.  I had to turn to this runner and tell them that this was just the beginning and that they would get some of this medicine too.  I don’t look at it as being “tough” I look at is as me giving you the proper guidance that you need.  Some of you have been running for quite some time and don’t need tinkering like the new runners, the veteran runners just need reminders at times and to be pushed other times.  The new runners bring with them forms that need some adjustments and lack of  proper ways of doing things.  Which is neither bad nor a surprise, I expect runners that are still early in their running development to have bad habits and not a lot of running knowledge.  That’s part of what this program brings to the table “guidance.”  So, if you ever feel as if I’m picking on you or another runner just know I’m not, I’m actually helping.

Three women and a baby

Allyson & I did 6x400 repeats on this bridge.

Have you ever needed a vacation from your vacation?  Well, I’m feeling like that after spending a few days with three women and a baby.  Allyson and I had planned on getting away to the beach for a few days and against better judgment we invited some family and I was driven absolutely insane.  No offense to family, babies, or women, but within hours I already wanted to catch a ride home.  Between talking about weddings, dress shopping, shoes, and a whining two year old I wanted to jump off a bridge.  Instead of jumping off a bridge I decided to do repeats up one.  Tuesday morning Allyson and I went out and did 6x400 repeats up the 9th Street Bridge in Ocean City, New Jersey.  Running always seems to take pain away even if it’s only temporarily.

I wanted to thank Harris for stepping up and running the Hill Workout while I was in hell, err, I mean vacation.  I don’t know who pissed Harris off, but for him to make the workout 600’s over 400’s someone must of rubbed him the wrong way and my money is on Rod.  Participating in the hill workout: Harris, Dawn, Charlotte, Rod, Kevin, Tim, Paul, and Eric.

Tomorrow, we will be back at Council Rock South for our daily Speed Workout.  Meet at the track at 6PM.  Also tomorrow will be the last day to sign-up for the Track Meet.  If you’re interested in participating get your butt out to tomorrow night’s workout and sign-up!

We also need Bowlers for the Bowling Bash on July 14th all money is due by July 4th I will be at the Revolutionary Run so you can pay on the last day if need be.

See you tomorrow evening back at South!

Heating Up

"TICK WARNING!  Ticks are out early this year as are fleas!  If someone comes saying they are checking for ticks due to the warm weather and they ask you to take your clothes off and dance around with your arms up.  DO NOT DO IT!  THIS IS A SCAM!  They only want to see you naked.  I wish I'd gotten this yesterday...I feel so stupid!" -Unknown

The above "Tick Warning" was found at our water station when we got there from our warm-up.  No one knew where it came from and we all shared a good laugh over it.  I have my suspicions of who may of done it.  I'm just thrilled that on a hot torturous day someone found a way to start the workout off with smiles.  The smiles didn't last long once we started climbing the hill.  We did 400 & 200 repeats on a nice shaded hill and even though the heat was ungodly we persevered and got in a decent workout.  Coming out to run in the hotness of the summer air was: Andrea, Tim, Kevin, Rich, Haydee, Charlotte, Paul, Denise, Rod and out for his first workout of the season Matt Hastings (welcome back!). I guess he was waiting for the weather to break...Way to get out there tonight Speedsters and put in a solid workout under extreme conditions.  I have decided to award you all with an extra point for participating in tonight's workout!  Which brings me to my next point, the Track meet.  We had two more Speedsters sign up for the meet tonight which was great, but we're still in need of 6 more runners.  If you have not signed up next week is the last week to do so, the teams will be decided next weekend.  Good week this week Speedsters, enjoy your weekend and if your going to be at the Equinox on Saturday I'll see you there.

If the shoe fits...

"God gave you the shoes that fit you, so put em on and wear em'..."-Eminem

Brooks hooked me up with the shoe that fit me and did I ever wear "em."  Since their debut to the running world in July 2009, I have owned 10 (now 14) pairs of the Launch.  Weighing in at 9.3 ounces, I wore them for everything.  Wearing them at work from time to time, sporting them out with jeans and shorts, and obviously for running.  Running nearly 300 miles per pair for a rough estimate of 3000 miles so far.  Those 3000 miles consisted of 2 ultras, 1 marathon, multiple half's, numerous trail runs, at least one mud run, and more training runs then I can even attempt to count. This running sneaker is by far my favorite trainer of all time! It saddens me that it has been discontinued and I'm not sure how I will get over this. One thing is for sure running won't be the same.  When I caught wind of it's early retirement on the Brooks Facebook page I literally ran into the other room to grab my wallet so I could order more, as if they would be sold out in a matter of minutes like a hot movie ticket or the Broad Street Run.  Now, the next problem I'm left with is how do I spread my last pairs out...Do I start mixing in other trainers till I find what ultimately can't replace the Launch, but will become the "have to do shoe?"  Time will ultimately tell that tale. Now, I would like to thank the people of Brooks for introducing me to the Launch, the sneaker that had taken me places, special places. One can only hope that you will give this amazing award winning running sneaker it's proper retirement party.  Here's to the very best in it's category; here's to you Launch, here's to you!

The Launch's biggest fan,

Track Recap

Whenever we have a timed mile like we did tonight, I get the same amount of moans and groans, but never any quitters.  You all put aside your dislike for the timed mile and focus your energy to running your hardest every time and it doesn’t end there.  Once done with your mile, you all help out either by timing the other group, writing down times, calling out times, or just by cheering each other on.  After all that you go and work hard at the rest of the workout.  Way to put forth the effort group, I know it’s not always easy, but always worth it.

Speedsters in attendance:

Allyson, Kevin, Tim, Jimbo, Joe, Jay, Rich, Brian, Charlotte, Haydee, Rod, Steve, Eric T, Eric Stern (first time out this season, welcome back!), Cory, and Denise.

Thanks for attending and for all your help tonight!

Workout:

1 mile warm-up
Stretch
1 mile hard
6x400 (400)
1 mile cool down

Sweet 16!

Tonight’s weather was just right, and compared to what we ran in on Tuesday it could be considered perfect.  Rod said that the reason for the big turnout (16) tonight was because Allyson was out for her first Hill Workout this season, but we all know it was because of the great weather.  It’s been nice having Allyson healthy and back out with us, and not just because I have a steady helper again, which is great, but also because she is healthy enough to workout.  There have been so many injuries this year that the Chinese might want to rename this year the year of the “Wounded Dragon.”  It’s not just our running community, just take a look at the Phillies (if anyone is still watching them).

Digging Deep tonight:

Allyson, Paul, Jimbo, Dawn, Andrea, Charlotte, Denise, Rod, Haydee, Renee, Mike, Rich, John, Kevin, and Eric.

Workout:

1 mile warm-up
2x800 (800)
4x400 (400)
1 mile cool down

Total of 6 miles

Great Job tonight Speedsters! Have a great weekend and Happy Fathers Day to all the Fathers.

Or Run In The Rain…

The rain came and so did the Speedsters!  We had 16 total runners come out and run in the rain tonight.  My original plan was to have us do a Timed Mile tonight, but after I saw the weather forecast was calling for all rain, I decided we should go with a short workout to get us in and out quickly.  It was almost as if the rain was playing games on us tonight, at times it seemed as if it was tapering off only to really pick up moments later.

The rain was not the only thing that showed up this evening, the following Speedsters came out and ran in the rain: Allyson, Eric, Charlotte, Rich, Jay, Joe, Glenn, Brian, “Lightning” Rod, Cory, Steve, Haydee, Denise, Kevin, and Jimbo.

Workout:

1 mile warm-up, stretch, 12x300 (100), 1 mile cool down

Announcements:

Our very own Activities Director and one of the sweetest of people that we all have had the pleasure of getting to know Denise Coll got engaged! Denise got engaged and is really taking the next step with Bill Manley a very nice gentleman.  Congratulations to you both!

Steve Cickay also made an exciting announcement tonight; Steve had been working hard to get elected to the Continental Congress and succeeded as the newest Delegate of the Continental Congress.  Congratulations and good luck on your new venture.

The Speedsters are now officially on the World Wide Web: http://www.buckscountyspeedsters.com please check us out.  Brendan Johnson worked hard on this and it turned out great.  Thanks Brendan, I’m not sure where you found the time to create a website for us, while planning a wedding and buying a new house.  Thank you also to Harris who had a part in this, will be taking it from here, and will be keeping it up to date.

The Streak Has Sadly Ended

I would like to begin this post with some sad sad news; Rod “Water bottle” Messenger after making 19 consecutive workouts ended his “Perfect Attendance” streak.  We had a moment of silence for him before we got started hammering the hills.  Speaking of hills we had a very small turnout, but we did have both Brenner’s out together for the first time ever!  We did 6x400 meter repeats.  Joining me was as I previously mentioned Harris and Dawn Brenner, Rich, John, Kevin, Paul, Charlotte, and Haydee.  Thanks for coming out and hammering the hills.

A few reminders:

  •  If you have not signed up for the Track Meet please do so ASAP.  We only have enough participants to field one team.
  • All last season Speedster Wear is now on sale BUY 1 GET ONE FREE!
  •  Please sign up for the Bowling Bash even if you don’t bowl come out and hang out all money raised   goes toward the track meet. ($25 per person)
