“People fail to get along because they
fear each other; they fear each other because they don't know each other; they
don't know each other because they have not communicated with each other.”

I
have to apologize for the situation that took place tonight and also add some
background to what transpired (Material for the podcast?). Last week
a group of ten year old runners and their adult coaches asked if they could use
the track as we were finishing up. We
told them they could as long as they stayed in the outside lanes until everyone
in our group had finished their workout and they agreed. This didn’t even last a single lap and the
kids were running in all lanes. I asked
several times nicely for them to move to the outside lanes and my words were
not received and were ignored. At one
point when I asked the kids to move out of lane one they laughed and continued
to run in lane one with no respect for my kindness. They even got in the way of one of our
runners while they were still working out.
I’ve always allowed
the public to use the track even if we are paying for usage and have rights to
the track from 6PM on. I allow the
public to use the track because I don’t want to be the person that prevents
someone from getting a workout in. I
just ask that you abide by our rules while we are still there. So, when the group that couldn’t abide by our
rules returned this week I told them politely that they could not get on the
track until we were finished. This
rubbed them the wrong way and started a mudslide of confrontation. I was called a liar and also when I told them
that this was for the safety of my athletes and also the well being of their
group, I was told that the 10 year olds are faster than most of our group and
because of this belief they wouldn’t be in the way. I was also told that the kids didn’t laugh
and didn’t run in lane one. Is this what
I have to look forward to when I become a teacher?
In any case we had a
