Track Recap By: Allyson

With Chris under the weather, I guess you could say I was in charge, even though he had to find someone (Harris) to lead the group stretches and get people to help me set up.  So, thanks to everyone that came out early and stayed later to help me unload the car and set things up/break everything down.  Tuesday’s on the track either mean rain or extreme heat.  This week was no different and the weather gods left us with another hot and humid night.  I thought the afternoon storms would have cooled things off, but it just made things stickier and buggier.  But if you were able to keep the sweat out of your eyes, there was a rainbow that appeared over the school.
Anyway, I may be an auditor by day but my calculating miles are a bit to be desired.  If you did the whole workout, it was definitely longer than what we’ve been doing.  Great job to anyone that did the whole workout, I know that I didn’t, my legs were pretty dead after racing the weekend.

Thanks to everyone that came out tonight:  NOT CHRIS(!!), Jay, Pete, Rob, Glenn, Alex, Jim, Hilda, Matt, Brian, Rod, Eric, Tereza, Harris, Maria, Christine, Carol, Chrissy, Nick, Anthony, Melissa, Angela, Bharminder, Joe G, Kevin, Denise, and first timers Jen and Stew Conard, and Dawn Brenner who has done hills, but not the track.

Workout:  Do the following 2-3 times through, try to descend your times each round
400(400)
800(400)

Sink or Swim

This must be the summer for me to face my fears.  First, I faced my fear of plummeting, by jumping off the Cape May Ferry, and then today I swam without my Linus blanket (wetsuit), in open water.  I had done this one other time and was kicked in the face knocking my goggles off my face and causing my anxiety to send me into a panic.  After that I promised myself that I wouldn’t open water swim without a wetsuit.

If it were possible I would have us all squeeze into Dr. Emmett Brown’s DeLorean and go back to the year 1985.  Which by the way may have been the year “Back to the Future” took place, if so that’s just a coincidence.   I don’t want go back in time to save a clock tower, but rather to show you where my fear of the open water began.  We would end up at Penn Warner Lake, summer of 1985.

When I was only a mere five years old, my family was living out of a pop up camper down at Penn Warner Lake in Tullytown, Pennsylvania.  My father was a drunken monster that we all feared.  Most of you can’t imagine fearing much when you’re five, let alone your own father.  But, my father wasn’t nominated father of the year any year, especially not in 1985.

In a drunken stupor, my father grabbed me and took me down to the edge of the dock.   The whole time he kept repeating that it was time for me to learn how to swim.  I can remember him repeatedly saying “its sink or swim time.”  Again, I was only five years old and though I didn’t completely understand what it was he was saying, I knew something terrible was about to happen to me.

Once we reached the foot of the dock, my father started swinging me from my tiny wrist like a pendulum, swinging me higher and faster, all the while I’m red faced and hysterically crying out for help.  I’m assuming I was yelling for my mother, but anyone would do.  In one swoop he let go and I went flying into the dark, murky waters of the lake.  I COULD NOT SWIM!

I remember trading off and on with the darkness of the water and the bright, blue skies as I fought to keep my head above the water.  The darkness was winning and I wasn’t learning how to swim, I started to sink, when all of a sudden two arms gathered me up and pulled me to safety.  My older brother Shawn, either heard my cries for help or it was one of those in the right place at the right time scenarios.

I don’t remember much right after, either I blacked out or I blocked the rest out.  I do remember my parents fighting and pulling at me as my mother was trying to get us all in the car.  I also remember as we drove away, a brown Michelob bottle smashing on the trunk of the car.  My mother stayed away for a while after this, but like she always did she was manipulated into reuniting with him.  I didn’t swim any more that summer.  I didn’t swim without my Linus blanket until today.

Metabolism! Come out come out where ever you are...

“Endurance is more than just competing, it's more than just running, it's a lifestyle of no easy options!”
                                                                                        ― a runner

I’ve always been a runner, it’s what I’ve always known, and it’s what I’ve always been good at.  Running has always been there for me.  What I’m struggling with now is how I became an over weight runner.  I was cautioned that once I reached my thirties my metabolism would slow.  I took that warning loosely and now I wish I hadn’t.  I’m thirty-three and though I didn’t notice any difference in my weight when I was thirty years old, I admittedly do now.

My metabolism didn’t slow; it came to an abrupt halt like a balking mule.  I went from being able to consume anything I wanted, at all hours with no change, to blowing up at the essence of Chick-fil-a, like a bee stunk allergy victim.  There might be a slight exaggeration taking place here, but it sure seems to be this way.  I had always been lighter than most, but with the increase in years in life came the accumulation to my weight.

In middle school I was on the 80 pounds and under relay team.  In high school I weighed in at a whopping 120 pounds.  When I got married in 2009 I was at a comfortable 150 L-B’s.  My racing weight is right around 150-145.  Three years later I gained 15 pounds and they didn’t go away.  Those 15 pounds moved in right above my waist, where I once housed an envious set of six pack abs.

I’ve tried every diet under a book sleeve, cut out carbs, and drank my self silly with vegetable juice cleanses.  The latter only lasted a day before I had to throw in the towel and call up Aldo’s for a meat lovers pizza.  A person could work themselves right into the looney bin trying to follow all the latest weight lost craves and diets.  I was going mad, mad I tell you!  One diet said to eat eggs but no beans, while another would declare the opposite, eat beans no huevos.

If you’re curious I didn’t loose weight with any of these methods.  With each failure came an edacity for food, which brought on an eating binge of glorious favorites such as previously mentioned Chick-fil-a, the nuggets soaked in a heavenly Chick-fil-a sauce, accompanied by salty warm waffle fries, washed down with an iced cold sweet tea with lemon.  I wouldn’t stop there either; a couple hours later I would follow up with either Oreo pudding snacks or Turkey Hill Rocky Road ice cream.

Now don’t get this distorted, I don’t think I’m fat, I just feel I had plateaued.  I was struggling to get back to my race weight of 150 lbs.  After my last eating craze I started looking into “Shakeology” a very expensive ($130 per month) meal replacement shake product by Beachbody, the same company that brought us P90X.  According to www.shakeology.com this product can help you lose weight, reduce cravings, reenergize, and improve digestion and regularity, and who doesn’t want better digestion and regularity.

I did my research on the Shakeolgy line and was convinced that something like this could work, but I wasn’t about to pay $130 for it.  And then I remembered I was already using a product that could be used in this manner.  UCAN Generation offers a similar product that I wasn’t using to lose weight.  I was using it as a protein shake after long runs and workouts, when I should have been using it as a meal replacement.

Our vision is inspired by a young boy's need for healthy energy, and that led us to create a new scientifically proven energy source called Superstarch - the only carbohydrate of its kind that delivers sustained energy, helps you burn fat, lets you recover efficiently, and allows you to perform at your peak. We're redefining the world of sports and fitness with natural, safe, and healthy nutrition. Our products question the existing approach and inspire a new generation to compete at their fullest ability and triumph the healthy way” (http://generationucan.com/speedsters/).

Three weeks ago I started replacing my breakfast with a UCAN shake, chocolate to be precise, with a tablespoon of creamy peanut butter, one whole banana, and 8 ½ ounces of 30 calorie, unsweetened vanilla flavored almond milk, blended with a handful of ice.  The shake is incredibly tasty and must be working.  I’ve lost eight pounds in these three weeks and am closing in on my goal race weight of 150 pounds.  I’m sitting at 157, which is the lightest I have been in over two years.  I’m able to eat what I want the rest of the day including a few beers on the weekends without guilt or weight gain.

Extra, extra, read all about it...

Steve Cickay pulled some strings and got a newspaper reporter to come out and write all about us.  The gentlemen that came out came across as very nice, but also a tad rushed and his excessive yawning made me think that he might be overworked.   I also can see how reporters misquote people all the time, this guy scribbled worse than my doctor writing a script.  I’m still amazed that the pharmacist can make out what’s written there.  I assume if this guy was for real the write up will be in the August addition of the Penny Pack Shopper.  Is it called that anymore?  It was nice to see the majority of you sporting the Speedsters singlet, though I forgot to get a picture of the group on my phone.

Last night was extremely hot, but still 22 Speedsters came out to workout.  This was impressive with the thermometer still north of the 90 degree mark and so many of you still opting to run.  I was also surprised that the moaning and groaning was at a season low.  I put together a simple workout that allowed multiple water breaks, but it was still challenging, maybe the whining is over for this year and we’re now getting down to business…doubtful.

Coming out in the heat:

Allyson, myself, Tereza, Rob (way to step it up and come out of your comfort zone), Hilda, Jay, Eric T, Rod, Brian, Christine Llyod did her first speed workout, Bharminder, Joe G, Joe H, Angela, Carol, Chrissy Gaul (first timer welcome!), our newest member Lev Skorodinsky (welcome to the Speedsters), Greg Z, Harris (welcome back!), Christina, Denise, and Steve C.
